Campsites may be organised or somewhere you select on the spur of the moment.  But there are some considerations that need to be taken into account before you commit to a camping site. Here we look at the art of selecting one that suits you.

You can’t pre-order a suitable campsite. One that will suit some campers and tents may not suit everybody.  However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your tents for the night.

A camping site means only 2 things.  The first is an organised campsite that people go to camp, which has facilities such as running water, showers, toilets, perhaps washing machines and even a shop. The bigger the site, the more facilities and the louder the night - so if you don’t like noise steer clear.Large sites may offer bar or entertainment facilities, which can be noisy at night. If you like socialising this may suit you well, but if not a quieter campsite may be just what you need.

The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your camping tents, which is not an organised campsite. This could be a field or open plot of land.Always ask permission if it is a field.Don’t assume you can camp there - many farmers dislike campers and may become angry if you make assumptions about their land.

The middle of nowhere is lovely and quite, but can be short of water supplies for washing and drinking.Bottled water is fine, but don’t forget about water.Don’t forget about the toilet arrangements.A nearby pub is useful but don’t forget toilet facilities!

Don’t pitch tent in a valley due to the flooding risk.  You should also try to avoid camping immediately adjacent to water such as a river or canal, since there will be more insects here and canals often have rats nearby, so exercise some caution near water.

Considering these factors can be the key to a comfortable successful camp, so choose what’s best for your particular needs.
